Board Gaming Is NOT Dead

"Boardgaming is NOT Dead!" is a group of N. IL Board wargaming grognards, most with over 40 to 50 years experience in our great hobby!

With a passion for history and passing that knowledge on, we host games each year and provide a forum for discussing them...stop by and say hello!

FRIDAY- DAYTIME OPEN GAMING

We'll be there all day with a variety of historical boardgames, card games, and a few set up. Jump in and play!

SLOT 1- 7- 11 PM

CRETE 1941 (Two games)    Judges: Dave Howe, Ike Eicher    Players: 1 or 2    Level:    Beginner/Intermediate

OPERATION MERCURY, May 1941: This fascinating game is designed as a solo game for a single player playing as the German Airborne and Mountain infantry that seeks to eject the forces of the British Commonwealth defending the island of Crete.  It's a fun and fascinating study of planning, execution, and the great unknown that you're really not sure where the enemy is...

We've found that it also makes for a great 2-player game, with the other player consulting with decisions during the invasion, or rolling for the British side! The game isn't complicated, but previous exposure to military unit hierarchy (battalions to regiments, etc.) is helpful.   There we be two copies of the game setup and run simultaneously.

SUPER MEMOIR '44: SWORD OF STALINGRAD    Judge: Ike Eicher    Players 2 to 8    Level:     Beginner

Southern Stalingrad, September 1942:  The Grain Elevator...The "Tennis Racket"...The Mameyev Kurgan..Red October Factory..All became legendary locations in of the greatest battles of the Eastern Front in WWII.

Commemorating the 75th anniversary of that titanic struggle, Memoir '44 is a easy to learn card-driven game of command and control.  Easy to learn and fun for all!

SATURDAY

Due to space limitations, at present we do not have a formal area for setup, but if available we will run the following:

CHURCHILL: The "Big Three" Struggle for Peace    Judge: Ike Eicher    Players: 3    Level:  Beginner/Intermediate

Another fantastic card-driven boardgame from designer Mark Herman,  Players will take the role of one of the "Big Three" WWII leaders-  Churchill, Roosevelt, or Stalin.  They must cooperate to defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, while positioning their country (and their ideals) for dominance in the post-war world...

Easy to learn, general familiarity with the timeline of WWII is helpful.

TWILIGHT STRUGGLE: The Cold War, 1946-1991    Judge:    Jason Eicher   Players: 2    Level:    Beginner

Rated the best boardgame of all time on Boardgamegeek.com,  this card-driven masterpiece sees the overt-and covert- struggle for world domination between the US and USSR.  Players will span the globe exerting political influence, toppling governments, and testing each other through foreign proxy-wars.   Be careful, if tensions escalate and DEF-CON 1 arrives, it's all over..

LABYRINTH: THE WAR ON TERROR 2001- ?    Judge Jason Eicher    Players: 2    Level:  Intermediate

The card-driven mechanic shines again in this simulation of the global war on terror.  The USA / Western player seeks to root out Jihadist terror cells and setup stable governments.  The jihadist player seeks to sow discord and topple governments in the resource-rich Middle East and beyond.  This is an EPIC struggle playing out in our lives today.  The mechanics are simple, but the options available and the depth of the game rate it intermediate level.

X-COM: THE BOARD GAME        Judge:    Ike / Jason Eicher    Players:  4    Level: Beginner

With its roots in the classic Microprose computer game of the 1990's, and now the super successful XBOX ONE games updating the franchise, players take one of 4 key roles in the International organization setup do defend against Alien Invasion!

A I-Pad App helps run the game, and all players are always under the gun to make decisions that will protect countries around the world and help the whole organization survive to defeat the aliens!  This one's a scream!

HOLLAND '44: Operation Market-Garden  Sept. 1944    Judge:    Ike Eicher    Players: 2-3    Level:    Intermediate

Recently released, this looks like another Operational-level masterpiece from designer Mark Simonitch.  This simulates the massive Allied airborne drop across Southern Holland to seize key bridges across the Dutch canals, to allow an armored thrust across them into Germany.  This is a traditional board wargame, with easy mechanics and rated intermediate for the strategies available to the players.
